We flew from New York back to Calgary for a few days to celebrate Diwali. It was WW’s first Diwali in person and Jonny’s first Diwali in person in many years, so we were really happy to be able to make it and celebrate with everyone. We listened to the story of Diwali as told by Usha, played with sparklers, and of course, ate a lot of delicious delicious food. Thanks Cam & Neeroo for hosting us! We were also really happy to see David & Hannah again – it seems like we keep saying impermanent goodbyes to those two! Before we knew it, we were on a flight to Mexico to meet up with Don & Sheila again!

For the first part of our stay, it was just us and Don & Sheila. Mostly our time was spent relaxing and visiting our favourite places from our previous trip. This included a number of taco spots, kayaking in the bay (we saw a couple of dolphins and explored the mangroves again!), and visiting Playa Los Muertitos. Coming back to these places was a welcome surprise for us, since when we left La Paz in May, we weren’t expecting to return for a number of years!

We revisited one of our favourite mezcal spots: Mezcaleria La Miserable, and got to introduce Don & Sheila and John & Linda to a number of interesting mezcals! I’m not sure any of us will be mainlining mezcal on the regular but it’s always a fun to experience the surprising diversity of flavour different mezcals can have.

We also brought them all to one of our favourite taco spots, Asadero La Monarka. It was still delicious but we were slightly dismayed to find out that it may have been acquired by Rancho Viejo since our last visit…

A big hurricane hit Baja California several weeks before our visit and we got to see a lot of the aftermath. Roads washed out, boats still wrecked in the bay, but most beautifully of all – chlorophyll! Everywhere we looked was a stark green contrast to the desert landscape we left behind in May.

Of course the Costa’s Hummingbirds were still around and delightful as ever.

Gwen, Jeff, Freddie, and Flora joined us for the second half of the trip!

Our time mostly consisted of child care, swimming, eating, reading, playing 5 Crowns, and relaxing. We all think the kids really enjoyed their trip (I’m sure the daily trips to the gelato place didn’t hurt), and it seems that Gwen and Jeff got to take a much needed vacation as well. We stayed with John & Linda for the second half of the trip and were really grateful for the space and also the great dinner & wine conversations!

WW – this has been a bit of a true vacation for us. I napped almost every day, and tried to rest a lot. We enjoyed a lot of family time and I’m really grateful we got the chance to do so!

J – I helped build a sandcastle with Freddie and Flora, and also nearly finished 2 books (an outrageous amount for someone who only really got into reading during COVID)!

I think this particular sunset got the high score this trip.

WW worked on Jonny’s Make Some Noise shirt for a day! She’s really really really proud of it.

We’re headed back to Calgary to pack for our Big Trip.

We’re headed to Thailand on December 1st, and we won’t be back in North America anytime soon (check our home page for where we’re planning on going!), so we’ve got lots of errands and packing to do while we’re in Calgary! Thanks so much to Don & Sheila and John & Linda for hosting us! We love you guys.
